Custom Classic Road Bike

Mark came to us when he broke his classic Lemond frame… it was cracked at the seat cluster across two tubes and two junctions of one weld. Sure, it was feasible to replace the tubes but realistically it was just smarter to spend the time and money to replicate the geometry of his beloved frame and add a few subtle updates to the frame.

He really loved the way his bike fit and rode, so we didn’t really want to change much about the fundamental cornerstones of what made that bike perfect for him… but we did want to throw in a couple touches that would bring him into the 21st century while maintaining that classic road bike feel. We decided to use a tapered head tube, a tapered seat tube, and he wanted internal routing for his rear brake cable. Nothing too drastic, but enough to make a classic bike feel distinctly custom.

He chose the color from a plethora of paint samples, and we were both super pleased with how it turned out… a unique copper brown with some subtle depth from some sublime metal flake. He elected for a modern style cable porting for the internal routing, but he let us choose the tubes that made up the frame. It ended up a menagerie of Columbus tubing that was tuned for stiffness in the right places while being compliant like his old tall boy Lemond. After all was said and done, this bike ended up being about 2 pound lighter than his original. We loved the fact that he chose a 105 mechanical group… a perfect balance of economy and performance!
